Angelica pubescens Maxim. f. biserrata Shan et Yuan
Shishiudo (Angelica pubescens, syn. A. polyclada) is a plant in the family Apiaceae, native to Japan.
It is a herbaceous perennial plant growing to 1–2 m tall with tripinnate leaves up to 1 m long, the leaflets being 5–10 cm long. The flowers are white, produced in large umbels.
The young stems and leaves are edible. Shishiudo is often mistaken with udo.
Angelica pubescens is a PERENNIAL growing to 1.8 m (6ft). It is hardy to zone 7 and is not frost tender. It is in flower from Jul to August. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by Insects.The plant is self-fertile.
The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils.The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.
